A God-given idea becoming a reality – that’s what the Transitional Housing Ministry is all about.
In 2003, four Wieuca women started wrestling with an idea that God had put on one of their hearts years before. Their goal was to share God’s love by becoming part of the solution to help homeless mothers and children build stable, productive lives – and they wanted to do it on Wieuca’s campus. Crazy? To be honest, they thought so – but God had a different idea.
After much research into homelessness, many shelter visits, intense education about problems and programs, and a tremendous amount of prayer, God led them to envision a transitional home for single mothers, with children, who were homeless and needed a helping hand as a final step to rebuild their lives before becoming completely independent.
The team felt that God wanted Wieuca to join Him in permanently breaking the cycle of homelessness for two families every 12-18 months and then to provide a prototype for other churches and organizations to do the same.
The house is now complete, and the Open House in May was a wonderful way to show what God has done, and to thank the more than 400 individuals, organizations, and foundations who had a part in renovating the house and making it into a home. A backyard play area is now being constructed and landscaped as an Eagle Scout project. What a blessing it will be to have a place for the children to play safely – something we take for granted but they may have never experienced.
God has provided everything the Ministry has needed – miracle upon miracle – but nothing has been more important than the work He has done in the hearts of Wieucans to give time, money, talents, and, most important of all, prayer to the Ministry. Homeless families will move from dependence to independence because we have a Lord filled with love for “the least of these”, a Lord who desires to work through His children, a Lord who makes crazy ideas become reality!
“Unless the Lord builds the house, the workers labor in vain.”
